About Statue of Zeus at Olympia: The Statue of Zeus stood inside the Temple of Zeus at Olympia, home of the ancient Olympic Games. Created by the master sculptor Phidias around 435 BC, the statue showed Zeus seated on an elaborate throne, built from wood and covered in gleaming ivory and gold. It was so tall that its head nearly touched the temple's ceiling. The Olympic Connection — It stood at Olympia, the very site that gave its name to the modern Olympic Games.
