About Lighthouse of Alexandria: home! The Lighthouse of Alexandria, also called the Pharos of Alexandria, guided sailors safely into one of the ancient world's busiest harbors. Built on the island of Pharos in Egypt, it used fire and mirrors to project light far out to sea at night. For centuries, it was one of the tallest structures ever built by humans. A Wonder of Engineering & Light — It combined engineering, fire, and optics to solve a very real problem — helping ships find home safely.
